Friends of the two students told the ABC the teenagers asked for cigarettes, and when they were turned down the alleged attack occurred.

One of the boys had cuts and bruises on his face as a result.

In response to the alleged assault ACT Police have increased patrols in and around bus interchanges in the territory.

Police said they have also met with Chinese community leaders, students, carers and parents.

They advised people to walk in well-lit areas where possible, to be aware of their surroundings and to give away their possessions if approached by strangers as ‘it is not worth being injured’.
