Boris Johnson’s National Security Council is set to make a final decision this week on allowing Chinese tech giant Huawei to supply equipment for the UK’s new 5G data networks despite espionage fears.

The secret group of senior Cabinet Ministers and security officials will convene after preliminary discussions recommended excluding the controversial firm from ‘core’ aspects of the network.

Whitehall insiders expect Mr Johnson’s team to uphold the decision to allow the firm to supply ‘non-core’ parts such as antennae for high-speed mobile internet infrastructure.

A previous meeting about Huawei became a Cabinet storm after former Prime Minister Theresa May sacked then Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson for leaking details to the media – a claim he denied.

The White House has urged allies to shun the firm, accusing it of spying, however last week Germany said it would give Huawei access to networks.

The Chinese firm denies posing risks.
