CHOICE put the most popular shredded cheese brands to the test

Battle of the cheeses! Experts rate popular shredded supermarket brands based on taste, cost and nutrition to determine which one is the best

Cheese has become a popular staple for transforming any boring meal into a delicious plate of dairy goodness.

But with so many products on the market, it’s hard to find the cheese of choice.

From cheddar to tasty cheeses and mozzarellas to blends, Australian consumer organisation CHOICE has put 36 brands to the test based on taste, cost and nutrition to determine which one is the best.

In a blind tasting, the experts looked at shredded cheese products from Aldi, Coles, Woolworths, Devondale, Mil Lel and Perfect Italiano – so how does your favourite brand stack up against the rest?

Of the products tested, five shredded cheese scored 80 per cent or more after delivering on both nutrition and taste in the blind taste test.

Perfect Italiano Mozzarella ($7.65) came out on top, with the highest score of 84 per cent, followed by Mil Lel Shredded Mozzarella Cheese ($4.50) with 83 per cent.

The two brands ‘created savoury delights’ among the judges, and were also two of just six in the test to get equal highest score for nutrition.

‘Nice supple texture with very good stretch. A richer mozzarella with a mild, cheesy flavour,’ the experts commented about the winner.

Winner: Perfect Italiano Mozzarella 

Score: 84%

Experts said: ‘Nice supple texture with very good stretch. A richer mozzarella with a mild, cheesy flavour.’

Mil Lel Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Score: 83%

Price per 100g: $1.18

Country of origin: Made in Australia from at least 96% Australian ingredients

Experts said: ‘Clean flavour with a milky sweetness, typical of mozzarella. Excellent stretch.’

Coles Mozzarella Cheese Shredded 

Score: 80%

Price per 100g: $0.93

Country of origin: Made in Australia from at least 95% Australian ingredients

Experts said: ‘Milky, mozzarella aroma. Nice flowy melt and good supple texture.’

Devondale Mozzarella Cheese

Score: 80%

Price per 100g: $1.17

Country of origin: Made in Australia from at least 96% Australian ingredients

Experts said: ‘Some good caramelisation with a moderate stretch. Slightly floury mouthfeel.’

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

While the judges said Mil Lel has a ‘clean flavour with a milky sweetness, typical of mozzarella. Excellent stretch.’ 

Coles Australian Mozzarella Cheese Shredded ($6.50), Devondale Mozzarella Cheese ($7) and Mil Lel Shredded Baking Blend ($4.30) weren’t far behind, with an overall score of 80 per cent.

The judges said Coles version has a ‘milky, mozzarella aroma. Nice flowy melt and good supple texture,’ while the Devondale has a ‘good caramelisation’ and Mil Lel has a ‘strong cheesy flavour, with good texture and stretch’.

Loser: Tuscany Cheese Shredded Tasty Blend

Despite Woolworths’ range not making the ‘recommended’ list, its Mozzarella Shredded Cheese ($4.70) received an over score of 76 per cent and 100 per cent for nutrition.

While Aldi’s Westacre Tasty Light Shredded Cheddar Cheese ($3.99) got an overall score of 66 per cent and Cowbelle Tasty Shredded Cheese ($5.29) with 63 per cent.

Meanwhile, Tuscany Cheese Shredded Tasty Blend ($5.50) scored the lowest point with just 31 per cent, followed by Coles Australian Tasty Cheddar Shredded ($5.80) with 43 per cent.
