Chris Eubank Jr targets James DeGale showdown after bizarre third-round TKO win over JJ McDonagh in Jeddah

Chris Eubank is seeking a fight with James DeGale after a bizarre victory here in which his opponent threatened to fight him with bare knuckles after quitting on his stool.

Journeyman JJ McDonagh pulled out of the chief supporting bout on this Groves-Smith world title night before the bell could ring for the start of the fourth round.

McDonagh cited deterioration of a previously injured shoulder but Eubank said: ‘I’m not too convinced about that. I think he stopped because the going got tough.’

The Irishman then turned more aggressive than he had been in the three completed rounds, threatening to attack Eubank after the gloves had been removed.

Eubank simply added: ‘I’m disappointed because after seven months out of the ring I needed some rounds to prepare for a big fight later this year.’

The word on the dusty streets of Jeddah is that there may be a December Battle of Britain against another former world super-middleweight champion, DeGale, who has an interim fight of his own in the US this Saturday night against Fidel Munoz.

The chance of Eubank shaking off more of the ring rust looked unlikely from the moment he scored a mystery knock down as early as the first round.

His wide left hook barely grazed the top of McDonagh’s head but the Irishman went down all the same. Flat on his back. He duly rose at eight and continued his optimistic but short-lived charge at Eubank.
