CHRIS SUTTON’S WEEKEND TAKEAWAYS: Something has gone badly wrong at Leicester

CHRIS SUTTON’S WEEKEND TAKEAWAYS: Something has gone badly wrong at Leicester and Liverpool’s midfield lacks top quality

  • Leicester were well beaten by Brighton and sit bottom of the league table
  • Liverpool’s midfield looks short of what is required to be champions
  • Richarlison is already looking to be one of the best buys of the summer

Another weekend of Premier League action is in the books with big wins for the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

There were plenty of talking points and Sportsmail’s Chris Sutton is here to give his view on them.

SOMETHING BADLY WRONG AT LEICESTER

I’ve said before that I wouldn’t be surprised if Brendan Rodgers walked away from Leicester.

He’s a proud manager who wants to compete and he hasn’t been a happy chap, watching on while the rest of the Premier League’s clubs spend money and his doesn’t.

Leicester suffered another defeat and remain rooted tom the bottom of the table

If results continue as they are, Rodgers may find himself pushed off the plank rather than walking off it freely, but something is not right at Leicester.

LIVERPOOL MIDFIELD LACKS TOP QUALITY

My 606 sparring partner Robbie Savage thinks Manchester United will finish above Liverpool this season.

I don’t know about that, but looking at the midfield that started the Merseyside derby, I wouldn’t say it is a title-winning one. Fabio Carvalho, Fabinho and Harvey Elliott are all talents, but good enough to become English champions? Don’t count on it. Liverpool are lacking a spark right now.

I’m sure we’ll see them emerge on the other side of this rough patch but six games in, they’re looking short of what’s required to be champions.

SPURS STAR ALREADY MAKING CONTE GIDDY

Richarlison was the best thing about Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Fulham. He didn’t get a goal on his first Premier League start but he did everything else. The way he broke in behind Fulham’s back line, his physicality, how he was linking up with Harry Kane as if they were old team-mates, his work-rate with and without the ball.

Richarlison already looks like one of the best buys of the summer, and Antonio Conte must be giddy that he got him.

IT’S CLEAR CHERRIES HAVE POINT TO PROVE

Scott Parker brought his sacking on himself with his comments about the players he had at Bournemouth. Imagine if you were in that dressing room, hearing your manager talking down your survival chances to the media.

It’s no surprise that we’ve seen a reaction since, with Bournemouth drawing 0-0 at home to Wolves and winning 3-2 at Nottingham Forest. ‘We’re rubbish, are we? We’ll show you what we can do!’

They’re still among the favourites to be relegated, but kudos to Bournemouth’s players and caretaker manager Gary O’Neil for their response.

IN-FORM IVAN HAS EARNED A CALL-UP

Brentford’s hat-trick hero Ivan Toney needs to be in England’s next squad. He’s a physical centre forward and a fine penalty taker, but that’s not all he is.

Remember that perfectly timed and weighted pass he made from the left wing for Brentford to make it 4-0 against Manchester United? That showed he is no mere target man, as did the variety of his three goals against Leeds on Saturday. Time to give him a chance, Gareth Southgate.
