CHRISTA D’SOUZA says a generation of children being orphaned in their teens can’t be a good thing

Everyday Ageism: CHRISTA D’SOUZA says a generation of children being orphaned in their teens can’t be a good thing, as the amount of time that women are allowed to keep their eggs frozen increases to 55 years

  • Time eggs are allowed to stay frozen has lengthened from ten years to 55 years
  • Christa D’Souza says it would be ridiculous for her to be pregnant at age 61
  • However, UK-based columnist claims she’d make a better mother now than at 37

It’s the last tolerated prejudice. But Femail’s had enough. It’s time we called out those day-to-day moments when we’re patronised for no longer being young…

The amount of time that women are allowed to keep their eggs frozen has just lengthened from ten years to 55 years.

If you think that’s a bad thing, I can understand why. The idea of 75-year-old women walking round stroking their bumps and a generation of children being orphaned in their teens can’t be a good thing.

Christa D’Souza (pictured) says it would be ridiculous for her to be pregnant at age 61, as the time eggs are allowed to stay frozen is increased to 55 years

Why do we, as a human race, think we can have it all, when we can’t? On the other hand, as we live longer, and drink more water and medical technology advances, is it so weird to be a primipara (as a first time mother is called) at, say, 50?

There are many ‘natural’ things which happen the wrong way round. Going to university at the age of 18, for example is one, but so is being at our most fertile in our teens. At 61, yes, it would be a ridiculous (not to say greedy) for me to be pregnant, but I’d make a much better mother now than I did at 37, the age I was when I had my first child.
