Cinemark movie theatres across the United States will implement a stricter policy for the size of personal items that can be brought into their screenings.

A notice posted on the company website alerted movie-goers that bags cannot be larger than 12″ x 12″ x 6″ according to the new policy, effective on Thursday.

No specific reason was given for what prompted implementation of the new policy, beyond the general purpose of enhancing ‘safety and security.’

The announcement reads: ‘Effective February 22, 2018: In an effort to enhance the safety and security of our guests and employees: Any bags or packages measuring larger than 12″ x 12″ x 6″ will not be permitted into the theatre.’

The post included illustrations of three different types of bags that would presumably be allowed, under this new rule.

The images showed what looked like a clutch, a handbag, and a small backpack.

Below the new requirements, other items that would likely be larger than the stated dimensions, but would still be allowed as an exception to the rule, were outlined.

‘Exception: Medical equipment bags and diaper bags,’ the post read.

Cinemark also warned its guests that the company would not be able to accommodate storing any impermissible items that a guest might show up with, during a movie’s showtime.

‘Cinemark does not provide a general area to check bags or any other personal belongings not allowed into the theatre,’ the site read.

At the end of the posting, the company reiterated a long-standing policy as well, adding:

‘Cinemark reserves the right to inspect all bags and packages entering the theatre.’
