Coles blasted by mum after ageing lettuce covered in brown slime

Mum is left DISGUSTED after cutting open her Coles lettuce to find it coated in ‘brown slime’ despite its fresh appearance: ‘Quality checks are gone’

  • A mother has shared a photo of an iceberg lettuce from Coles with brown slime
  • She had purchased the $3.50 produce while grocery shopping on Saturday
  • She posted the photo of the lettuce onto a Facebook page, blasting the quality
  • The post was inundated with furious comments from members of the public

An Aussie mum has blasted supermarket giant Coles after peeling back the first few layers of her lettuce to find it was rotting inside.

Maria D’Amato was loading her groceries into her car on Saturday when she discovered her $3.50 iceberg lettuce was covered in a brown slime a few layers in.

Ms D’Amato later posted a photo of the vegetable to Facebook along with the receipt.

‘Unbelievable, It’s not the first and it won’t be the last…Quality checks are gone,’ the post was captioned.

Ms D’Amato confirmed to Daily Mail Australia she returned the lettuce to the Coles store and was given a refund of $3.50.

The disgusted mother shared a photo of the $3.50 iceberg lettuce she purchased from Coles. She discovered brown slime throughout after peeling it back a few layers

Her post received a significant reaction from users, including one woman who said she often left fresh produce behind because of its quality.

‘Not at all unbelievable. I have seen so much produce in the supermarkets that should be binned and covered in mould or slime – though I tend to leave it there and not put into my trolley. Staff don’t seem to care,’ she wrote.

‘So you are expecting someone else to notice something that even you failed to notice before you bought it?… Obviously it wasn’t noticeable and was clearly under many leave. No one would be able to tell,’ another said.

A third said: ‘Who doesn’t look at their fruit and veg when they buy it? As if you didn’t see that.’

‘So if you didn’t notice this as maybe it was underneath the outer leaves then how should they? It’s like when you get a capsicum that’s rotted on the inside. There isn’t X-ray vision for that,’ a fourth commented.

A fifth person said: ‘I don’t understand how she picked it up and didn’t notice it then paid for it then put it in car…That would of been at least four times she had to handle it before noticing.’

‘The amount of fruit and veg that are binned just for how they look is ridiculous enough. Peel it back and eat what’s fine…It’s not like it cost you $12 for that lettuce,’ a sixth person added.

Coles declined to comment when contacted by Daily Mail Australia.
