A Coles store tried to force employees to donate to charity with a compulsory ‘mufti day.’

A message from staff to employees informing them of a non-uniform day at one store has gone viral online.

The sign tells staff that they must come to work on Friday in their own clothes while wearing their name badges and pay $2 to Red Kite cancer charity.

Coles has been accused of extorting its employees by forcing them to donate to charity

It says that anyone who forgets or decides not to partake will have to donate $5.

The note signs off ‘please give all donations to you managers or department in-chargers.’

An image of the note was uploaded to Reddit where commenters slammed the supermarket, with one writing: ‘surely that can’t be legal.’

It is not clear which store the note was posted at – but it has now been removed.

A Coles spokesman said: ‘Coles is passionate about supporting Redkite and our store teams have raised more than $28 million through fundraising activities such as dress up days.

‘Our fundraising activities are voluntary for team members to participate in and this sign is not in accordance with our usual practices and has been removed at the store.’
