Colombian burglary gang targeting rich Asians in Australia steals over $10million worth of cash

A fly-in fly-out Colombian burglary gang which targets luxury homes owned by people of an Asian background have stolen more than $10million in cash, jewellery and designer goods.

Police say more than 100 burglaries have taken place in Melbourne suburbs including Hawthorn, Kew, Brighton and South Yarra in the span of one year.

The ruthless burglars, who work in teams are able to break into luxury homes, normally owned by Asians, by strategically disabling security alarms and CCTV cameras, while one alerts others through a radio.

The alleged mass raids were carried out through vehicles bought on the internet registered under the name of the previous owner.

The crime gangs are alleged to have access to a database where they are able to track Asian names, which are linked to their home addresses.

The Colombian gangs, which are rampant worldwide, usually target Asian homes for their reputation of wealth.

‘They aim for high-end stuff, it’s not your run-of-the-mill burglary,’ Bayside Detective Sergeant Andrew Collison told the Herald Sun.

An exhaustive search have led police officers to arrest two alleged members of the burglary gang outside a Kew property on August 31.

Two Colombian natives Angela Viviana Rojas Cubillos and Andrea Del Jimenez Rojas, both 33, have been charged and were bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 22.

The woman arrested is understood to only have had a visitor’s visa.

Detectives are investigating whether the same Colombian burglary gang were responsible for the dozens of Melbourne break-ins of luxurious stolen goods in the past three years, including a $2million robbery at Brighton property in April this year.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Collison said Colombian burglary gangs were a global phenomenon.
