A Colorado woman was found guilty of trying to kill her husband on Friday after the couple’s six-year-old grandson testified that she purposefully lit his car on fire while he was asleep inside.

Andrea Toni Moreno, 48, was convicted of first degree attempted murder after a Jefferson County jury learned of the events of July 20, 2017.

Prosecutors were successfully able to prove that at about 11.30pm on the night in question, Moreno doused her husband’s car in gasoline and lit in on fire as he slept inside the vehicle, KUSA reported.

At around the same time, Arvada firefighters were responding to an unrelated incident when they saw the flaming car in the driveway of 5075 Swadley Street, in Wheat Ridge.

When they arrived at the scene of the incident, Darrell Gonzales had managed to escape from the flaming car and was found standing in the garage.

Court documents state that Moreno and Gonzales were drinking heavily and had gotten into a heated argument prior to the incident.

Gonzales had left the home in an effort to de-escalate the situation and returned shortly after 9pm, only to find that his belongings had been tossed out onto the front lawn.

To make matters worse, Moreno had locked her husband out of the home, forcing him to take shelter inside the family vehicle.

It was then, prosecutors said, that Moreno lit a match and threw it on the car all the while while her grandson watched.

According to KUSA, it was the testimony of the couple’s small grandchild that sealed Moreno’s fate at the end of the three-day trial.

Moreno was also found guilty of fourth degree arson, child abuse and violation of a protection order. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 6.
