A comedian has claimed an Uber driver sped off once he realised he was disabled – and then charged a cancellation fee.

Ted Shiress, 30 and a friend were waiting for an Uber they had ordred on New Year’s Eve to take them home from a house party.

His friend asked the driver to reverse closer to Ted to help him out because he has difficulty walking.

But instead the driver drove off but still charged Ted’s friend the £4 cancellation fee.

Ted, who lives alone in Cardiff, is convinced that the reason the driver left them standing on the pavement is because he has cerebral palsy.

The comedian has played gigs all over the country in Glee Clubs, a small chain of independent live stand-up comedy venues in the UK.

Although he typically uses a mobility scooter to get around he was using his walking frame while waiting for the taxi.

Ted said: ‘I would not say we were perfectly sober, but we were not that messy, we were just a tiny bit drunk, as anyone would be at about 3am on New Year’s Eve.

‘He was quite far down the road, and my mate went to him to ask if he could reverse a bit [saying] my friend has walking difficulties. He did reverse, he just didn’t stop.

‘I just wanted to go home and go to sleep’.

Luckily he managed to get another cab home a short while later.

He added: ‘You get some really lovely taxi drivers, but once in a while you get some not very nice ones.

‘Maybe they are a bit scared of the unknown. I am quite used to things like this happening, you get a bit jaded at it all. I’m not angry but it shouldn’t be like that.’

Uber has since apologised, and on their website it says that they have a 'zero tolerance policy towards discrimination of any kind'

Ted tweeted the next day: ‘Hey @uber, upon seeing I was disabled and had a walking frame one of your drivers drove off and somehow we got charged for ‘canceling’. Not cool.’

Uber has since apologised, and on their website it says that they have a ‘zero tolerance policy towards discrimination of any kind’.

Ted has his own YouTube channel where he loves to make people laugh but also spread positive messages about cerebral palsy to his 907 subscribers.
