Comedian Dave Chappelle celebrates Grammys win at Coogee Beach, Sydney

Dave Chappelle celebrates his controversial Grammys win as he joins his entourage for beers at an alcohol-free beach in Sydney

Dave Chappelle hit the beach in Sydney on Tuesday after his polarising Grammys win for his Netflix special The Closer.

The American comedian, 49, was surrounded by cartons of beers at an alcohol-free beach in the eastern suburb of Coogee – but it was unclear if the drinks were for him or members of his entourage.

Chappelle, who is in Australia for his stand-up tour, was seen relaxing beneath a large beach cabana with boxes of local ale sitting next to him.

Nearby were stacks of red beer cups and two eskies.

Drinking alcohol at Coogee beach is prohibited 24 hours a day, with penalties reaching up to AUD$2,200.

Chappelle didn’t seem concerned about brining beers to the beach as he relaxed on a chair next to his friends while staring down at his phone.

Earlier in the day, Chappelle was seen arriving at the beach flanked by two bodyguards.

The trio was seen walking down the beach wearing sneakers rather than sandals – a rookie error for those unfamiliar with the perils of removing sand from shoes.

Bizarrely, the comic continued to wear sneakers even as he relaxed on a beach chair.

No footage of the wild scenes has emerged as Chappelle has maintained a strict no-phones policy at his performances for at least six years.
