Comedian Sam Simmons HIJACKS Today Extra advertorial segment

When breakfast TV goes wrong: The moment a Today advertorial presenter bursts into tears because he can’t afford the product – before the TRUTH comes out

On Monday, Today Extra was hijacked by comedian Sam Simmons, who broke down in tears while presenting a bizarre advertorial for a fictional mattress company.

In the segment, the funnyman, 42, used some rather bizarre techniques to promote the brand ‘Slumber-Tech’, much to the bemusement of presenter Yvette Done.

The infomercial was paid for by real-life mattress brand Koala, which arranged the prank with Sam in the hopes the segment would go viral on social media.

When breakfast TV goes wrong: Comedian Sam Simmons HIJACKED a Today Extra advertorial segment on Monday – before revealing it was actually a promo for Koala mattresses

‘We came up with a fake mattress company and bought an infomercial on Channel Nine and this is what happened. Sorry, Yvette,’ the company said in a statement.

It’s unclear if Yvette was in on the joke, as she attempted to remain professional while Slumber-Tech ’employee’ Tony (played by Sam) caused chaos on set of the daytime show.

During the segment, Sam mostly spoke nonsense, bounced around on a mattress and mocked the fictional product’s price tag of $7,500, before finally bursting into tears.

‘At Slumber-Tech we know better than anybody how nice sleep is… how nice is sleep? And here’s a secret – the best place to sleep is on a mattress!’ rambled Sam.

Towards the end of the segment, Sam – who by this stage was visibly distraught – revealed that Koala is a better alternative to traditional mattress brands.

‘Have you heard of Koala? They cost less than a grand and deliver in four hours!’ he said.

Sam returned to Today Extra to promote Koala alongside Yvette again on Thursday.

Getting into character! During the segment with Yvette, Sam mostly spoke nonsense, bounced around on a mattress, mocked the apparent product price of $7,500 and then started to cry

Despite Yvette still referring to Sam as his character, Tony, Koala’s logo was visible on set this time with no mention of the fake brand ‘Slumber-Tech’.

At the end of Thursday’s segment, Yvette and Sam offered Today Extra viewers their own discount code to purchase a mattress from Koala’s website.
