Jacinda Ardern like you’ve never seen her before: Comedian’s botched cake job depicting the New Zealand PM goes viral
- Kiwi comedian Laura Daniel baked and iced a cake depicting Jacinda Ardern
- She made the cake this week during an episode of Kiwi TV show Seven Sharp
- Daniel, 28, and host Hilary Barry took part in a two-hour bake-off competition
- Daniel produced a ‘terrifying’ cake that looked nothing like the prime minister
Comedian Laura Daniel has apologised to Jacinda Ardern after baking and decorating an unflattering cake depicting the New Zealand prime minister.
The Kiwi comedian made the cake during an episode of TV show Seven Sharp, which aired across the ditch earlier this week.
Daniel and host Hilary Barry took part in a bake-off competition, and had two hours to make a flourless cake.
But Daniel, who used the front cover of Ardern’s autobiography for inspiration, fell short of accurately depicting the prime minister’s face.

Jacinda Ardern later jovially commented two shocked face emojis on the post
Instead the 28-year-old’s cake resembled a character from a horror movie, with stark white icing for the skin, googly eyes, large fake teeth and thick pieces of black licorice to portray Arden’s hair.
‘They say don’t bake your heroes but I wanted to try anyway. I’m deeply sorry @jacindaardern I truly tried my best with what I had available,’ Daniel wrote on Instagram, along with a photo of her failed cake attempt.
The prime minister later commented two shocked face emojis on the post.
Hundreds of social media users expressed their amusement at the comedian’s cake, labelling it ‘truly haunting’.
‘That will visit my dreams,’ one user wrote.
‘That is terrifying,’ said another.
‘Nailed it,’ one user sarcastically declared.
The hilarious cake gaffe comes three days after Ardern announced she will take a 20 percent pay cut in a symbolic act of solidarity with people struggling financially during the coronavirus pandemic.
Ardern said on Wednesday that her personal salary, those of her fellow ministers and of top public servants would be slashed by a fifth for six months.
The move will see Ardern’s annual pay fall from around NZ$470,000 (AUD$442,205) to NZ$376,000 (AUD$353,313).
Over the six-month period it will cost her about AUD$44,220.
‘While it in itself won’t shift the government’s overall fiscal position, it is about leadership,’ she told reporters.
New Zealand is in the midst of a four-week COVID-19 lockdown that has paralysed the economy, with thousands of jobs losses already announced.
