Cheech & Chong take Manhattan! Comedy duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong reunite in NYC to produce their own biopic

Grammy-winning comedy duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong reunited in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood on Tuesday – hours after it was revealed they’re executive producing their very own biopic.

The 76-year-old LA native and the Canadian 84-year-old were most likely discussing their origin tale for Hidden Pictures, which is the same production company behind Cheech’s recent film Shotgun Wedding.

‘We are excited to show the world how two dudes from completely different backgrounds got together, changed comedy, and made cannabis mainstream!’ Marin and Chong told THR in a statement.

Director Kristian Mercado Figueroa took to Instagram on Tuesday to confirm his involvement writing: ‘So hyped for the team involved to make this happen. Can some one pass me a joint? … I believe in the power of love and friendship and comedy. This film will be so special. Beyond honored.’

The Cheech & Chong screenplay will be penned by Ren & Stimpy reboot writers Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan.

The counterculture cannabis-loving duo – who originally met in the late sixties in Canada – have released several marijuana-themed comedy albums and movies (four of which Tommy directed).

Marin and Chong – who split between 1985-2008 – are best known for writing and starring in Lou Adler’s $2M-budget buddy stoner comedy Up In Smoke, which was a cult classic that amassed $104M at the global box office in 1978.

The father of Rae Dawn Chong and the avid Chicano art collector were last seen together presenting the Global Icon Award to the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 28.

Cheech (born Richard) currently plays recreation center manager Julio opposite Woody Harrelson in Bobby Farrelly’s solo directorial debut Champions, which has earned $13M since hitting US theaters March 10.

And Tommy recently reprised his role as Point Place’s Army veteran-turned-hippie Leo Chingkwake in two episodes of Netflix’s That ’90s Show, which was a revival of Fox’s That ’70s Show.

Between the two of them, Chong was the only one who ever did hard time in prison for marijuana.

The cannabis activist served nine months at the Taft Correctional Institution in 2003-2004 after being charged for his part in financing and promoting Chong Glass/Nice Dreams, which distributed 7,500 bongs online.
