An intense fire which destroyed an abandoned supermarket has sparked major peak-hour delays in Melbourne.

Firefighters are still battling the blaze, which engulfed the building on Lygon Street in Brunswick East at about 3.30am on Monday.

The supermarket’s roof collapsed and emergency crews feared the fire would spread to neighbouring properties, but managed to contain it to the building.

Lygon Street is closed between Albion and Stewart Street and is expected to remain closed throughout the peak-hour commute.  

Trams will be affected for some time and commuters are advised to avoid the area.

Motorists are advised to use Nicholson Street or Sydney Road to avoid the closure. 

The cause of the blaze is not yet known however Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board have said the fire is suspicious and Victoria Police are now investigating.
