 Sylvia Jeffreys is leaving the Today show, she confirmed on Saturday. 

In a statement, the 32-year-old revealing she is moving on, but won’t be leaving the Nine Network. 

She will take on an as-yet unannounced ‘prime time role’ the show’s head of news and current affairs at Nine, David Wick, told The Daily Telegraph on Saturday.

Sylvia insists she is ‘excited’ by the new challenge.  

Her statement reads: ‘I’ve loved and embraced every minute of my TODAY show chapter and feel humbled to have worked with so many passionate people. 

‘Hosts, studio crew, cameramen and producers – who have become my great mates. There are few shows that are fortunate to have such an engaged audience, and I thank our viewers for inviting me into their homes day after day.

‘I’m thrilled to sink my teeth into a brand new project. Opportunity often knocks when you least expect it and I’m ready to dive right in to what’s ahead of me’ the news presenter concluded.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, David Wick has insisted that Sylvia has a bright future at the network despite her departure from the breakfast program. 

‘Sylvia has done a great job on Today, and while the team there will miss her, she is about to embark on an exciting new ­challenge. Watch this space in 2019,’ he said. 

It comes after a week of feverish speculation as to Sylvia’s future at Today after the axing of her husband, Peter Stefanovic, from the Weekend Today show. 

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Peter Stefanovic is leaving Channel Nine, after 15 years in the job.

Peter’s departure was officially announced after weeks of speculation and denials. 

A statement from Channel Nine read:  ‘Peter has decided to explore new opportunities and is looking forward to spending weekends with his wife.  

‘He has been a respected member of the Nine News team and Weekend Today, and we wish him all the best for the future.’

Once Peter was gone, it was suspected that his wife would follow.  

Peter Ford alleged on Monday that Sylvia will be replaced by Tracy Vo, a presenter with Nine’s Perth news team. 

The entertainment reporter Tweeted: ‘As I reported yesterday there is also a plan to also ‘redeploy’ @SylviaJeffreys and @Tracy_Vo is favourite to move east.’

Tracy, 35, currently based in Perth, celebrated ten years at the network last year, having started at Channel Nine in 2007.
