Conor McGregor has revealed he was due to fight at UFC 224 last month but those plans were scrapped after ‘something came up’ – costing him second place in Forbes’ rich list of the world’s highest-paid athletes.

The Irish star was set for his long-awaited comeback in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil before that opportunity was taken away due to an assault charge against him in April.

McGregor alluded to this via his Instagram account on Wednesday and the financial implications it cost him.

‘If I had of fought on the agreed May 12th bout in Rio De Janeiro, I would have surpassed [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi to take 2nd place.

‘Something came up however… Ah well, still under 30.’

McGregor’s total worth is £73.5million ($99m) – a figure that is below Floyd Mayweather £212m ($285m), Lionel Messi £82.7m ($111m) and Cristiano Ronaldo £80.5m ($108m). Neymar completes the top five having earned £67m ($90m).

In another post via his Instragram account, McGregor referenced his wealth as he wrote: ‘Solid work tonight because 4th place doesn’t get a medal’.

Two-weight champion McGregor has not fought in the octagon since November 2016.

In April, McGregor was involved in a bus attack that took place during a UFC 223 media day event in Brooklyn. Two fighters were injured by broken glass and three bouts were canceled.

The 29-year-old faces three charges of misdemeanour assault and one count of felony criminal mischief and is due in court June 14.
