Conor McGregor has leapt to his own defence after being widely mocked for his ‘terrible’ first pitch at a Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball game.

UFC superstar McGregor, 33, has been in the United States recently, and was invited to throw the pitch at Wrigley Field on Tuesday evening.

His effort was launched wide of the catcher and away to the right, however, with the Notorious failing to direct the ball over the plate entirely.

To little surprise, McGregor stepped up before the Cubs’ match against Minnesota Twins in a customary dapper suit, and believes the throw was carried out with style.

Almost immediately after the miss, comparisons were made between McGregor’s pitch and 50 Cent’s calamitous attempt in 2014, and the Irishman has bitten back.

Posting a side-by-side photo of the two celebrities arching wide of the home plate, McGregor wrote: ‘Picture to picture alone buries this.

‘Mine, bar the accuracy, was the most powerful and fastest first pitch of any of these other athletes/artist over the years. No comparison.’

He then alluded to the fact that he has earned more than Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Roger Federer during the past year, according to Forbes’ latest rich list.

McGregor, with his $180m (£131m) total earnings over the last 12 months, finds himself in top spot, with PSG talisman Messi behind him with $130m (£95m).

Ronaldo, now at Manchester United for a second spell after 12 years away, has banked $120m (£88m), while Federer sits in seventh with $90m (£66m).

‘Smoke them up and down that Forbes I do,’ McGregor added. ‘Get Messi over. Smoked. Cris. Smoked. Federer. Doubled. All time Most Power!

‘Put me in the Wrigley hall of fame for that rocket launch. Beside some of that nice red brick. Mahogany Oak Frame. Wimbledon lines in the grass.

‘The great Wrigley Field reminds me of the grounds on my land in Ireland. Impeccable.

‘Anyway back to the pitch. Venom. Composure. Balance.’

McGregor has been seen in California, New York and now Chicago in recent weeks, using a single crutch, as he continues to recover from his grizzly leg break.

It was expected that the 33-year-old would be ruled out for at least a year after the loss by Dustin Poirier in July, but Dana White has hinted at an earlier return.

‘Conor seems to be healing up pretty well,’ he told the Australian Daily Telegraph. ‘The question is: When can he start kicking again?

‘If he could take kicks, then he’d be looking at a fight before the end of the year again, so it all depends on how fast that leg heals.’
