Consumer experts at Choice Australia test slice white sandwich bread and reveal which is best

A panel of experts from consumer organisation Choice Australia has tested ten types of sliced white bread to reveal which brand is best.

Sliced bread, including gluten-free bread, from a range of leading manufacturers, were selected including Abbott’s Village Bakery, Helga’s, Mighty Soft, Tip Top and Wonder White.

Testers examining the breads put each through its paces, ranking loaves on taste, texture, appearance and nutritional value.

The results show which brand ticks all the boxes and offers incredible value – with experts saying the winning loaf earned top marks for taste, flavour and a ‘soft springy crumb’.

This brand of bread, Wonder Wholegrain White Smooth Wholegrain, took out top spot on the list of sliced white breads reviewed by Choice

1. Wonder Wholegrain White Smooth Wholegrain

The top-ranked product on Choice’s list of best sliced white bread is Wonder Wholegrain White Smooth Wholegrain.

The bread, priced at $3.40 a loaf, was awarded an overall score of 78 per cent by experts who put it to the test.

In terms of taste, the bread was given a score of 78 per cent, and nutritionally it earned a score of 80 per cent.

‘Good overall appearance with even browning. Soft, springy crumb. Aeration evenly distributed across the loaf. Delicate sweet ferment aroma. Good flavour, tastes more wholemeal,’ said experts at Choice.

2. Aldi Has No Gluten Free Sliced White Bread

The review also included several gluten-free varieties to make selecting white bread easier for those with food intolerances.

Coming in at second place was a gluten-free loaf by Aldi, its Has No Gluten-Free Sliced White Bread, priced at $3.99

This loaf earned top marks in taste, 75 per cent, as well as nutrition, 80 per cent, and an overall score of 77 per cent.

3. Coles Gluten Free White Bread

Coming at third place on the list was a gluten-free loaf from Coles.

It’s Gluten Free White Bread, priced at $4.50 per loaf, was awarded an overall score of 77 per cent.

As far as nutritional value, this bread earned an impressive 90 per cent, however, it ranked slightly lower in taste and was awarded 71 per cent.

4. Wonder Active Active Low GI + Protein

Wonder Active Active Low GI + Protein, priced at $3.40 a loaf, was awarded fourth place on the review.

Testers assessing the loaf on nutrition and value gave it scores of 90 per cent and 72 per cent respectively.

Overall, the bread was awarded a ranking of 77 per cent.

5.  TipTop The One White Sandwich 

Taking out the fifth spot on the list was a loaf by Tip Top, it’s The One White Sandwich, priced at $3.40.

This loaf earned an overall score of 75 per cent. Experts awarded it a mark of 75 per cent for taste and a score of 90 per cent for nutritional value.

6. Abbott’s Village Bakery Rustic 

Taking out sixth place on the review, with an overall score of 74 per cent, was Abbott’s Village Bakery Rustic.

The loaf, priced at $3.80, performed well in both taste and health tests. It was rated 75 per cent for flavour, and 70 per cent for nutritional value.

7. Coles High Fibre White Sandwich Loaf

Seventh place was awarded to Coles High Fibre White Sandwich Loaf, priced at an affordable $2.20.

This loaf also holds an overall rating of 74 per cent. Testers gave it a score of 70 per cent for taste and it was was awarded a score of 90 per cent for nutritional value.

Helga's Traditional White Gluten Free was ranked in eighth on the list

8. Helga’s Traditional White Gluten Free

The review awarded Helga’s Traditional White Gluten Free, priced at $7, an eighth place ranking.

The gluten-free bread, one of the more expensive put to the test, was given an overall score of 74 per cent. 

Experts for the watchdog awarded it a mark of 76 per cent for taste. The loaf was given a 70 per cent rating for its health component.

9. Lawson’s Original White

Ninth place on the list was given to Lawson’s Original White, a bread that’s also slightly pricier than some awarded top marks.

The loaf, which costs $5.80, holds an overall score of 74 per cent. Test results for taste and nutrition were 75 and 70 per cent respectively.

10. Aldi Baker’s Life Bakehouse White

Aldi Baker’s Life Bakehouse White, coming in at tenth place, was one of the cheapest loaves reviewed.

The bread, priced at $1.49 , fared reasonably well with experts awarding it an overall score of 73 per cent.

As far as flavour, the budget-priced bread earned a score of 75 per cent while nutritional value was ranked at 75 per cent.
