What should you buy?

Stain remover and dishwasher tablets

According to Choice, Aldi has a variety of impressive products when it comes to stain removers and dishwasher tablets.

In a recent stain remover test the consumer organisation conducted the Aldi Di-San Oxy Action with Enzymes Pre Wash tied first as the most effective spray, and it will only set back customers $1.25.

Choice also recommend Aldi’s Logix dishwasher tablets as the Logix Platinum 18 in 1 Dishwashing Tablets got the same score in their testing as a leading brand that’s almost twice the price.

Nappies

Nappies from Aldi are one of the cheapest on the market and they have also performed highly in recent Choice reviews.

The consumer organisation tested a variety of different nappies for absorbency, leakage and strength and the Aldi products came out on top.

This will be a relief for many parents as with raising a child being so expensive, this is one way they can cut a cost without compromising on quality.

Clothes dryers

Although they don’t sell dryers regularly, when Aldi do they sell them as part of their Special Buys promotion, they usually with a bargain-basement price tag.

Choice previously tested one of their clothes dryer reviews and their household and whitegoods expert said it was good for the price point.

‘It was a little lacking in capacity, but held its own against other vented dryers, so for $200 with a three-year warranty, it’s a decent offer,’ Ashley Iredale said.

Gourmet ice-cream

Ice cream lovers will be happy to know that in a recent taste test of premium vanilla ice creams at Choice, experts rated Aldi’s Monarc Indulge Vanilla Opulence as the one of the best money can buy.

Making this even sweeter is the fact that it’s also one of the cheapest with a price of $4.49.

This is less than half the price of Connoisseur’s Classic Vanilla which received the same score but costs $10.

Ski gear

Aldi’s annual ski gear sale is coming up on Saturday 18 May, and according to Choice this isn’t one to be missed.

After much extensive research they concluded that the range is a great option for parents who need affordable ski gear for growing kids.

‘Our whole family is kitted out with the Aldi ski gear and we’ve found it really competitively priced. It’s warm and well made – we’ve had some of this gear for over 10 years and it’s still going strong,’ one Choice parent said.

What should you avoid?

TVs

Choice’s TV expert Denis Gallagher advised against people buying a TV from Aldi.

‘Aldi has offered pretty good value on TVs over the years, but these days there’s more competition and prices are coming down across the board,’ he said.

‘You’re better off going with a branded product – the Aldi TVs we’ve tested in the past have had variable results.’

Heavily processed own-brand products

Be sure to look at nutrition labelling when you shop.

A recent report found that Aldi has the highest amount of ultra-processed own brand products on its shelves, compared to the other major supermarkets.

So keep an eye on things like added sugars, fats and preservatives.

Capsule coffee machine

Although its low cost may be tempting for many people, Choice recommend you avoid buying Aldi’s Expressi Multi-Beverage Capsule Machine 595 for $120.

This is because it didn’t perform well in their coffee machine reviews, scoring just 45 per cent in the taste test.

Liquid laundry detergent for top loaders

Choice warned that those who buy laundry liquid from Aldi for their top loader should read reviews first.

During their tests the Trimat Advanced Laundry Liquid Sensitive scored only 48 per cent in a top loader and the Almat Laundry Liquid Concentrate came in at 47 per cent.

They said if you were going to buy one from Aldi for a top loader to reach for the Trimat Advanced Laundry Liquid Regular but keep in mind it performed only slightly better with a score of 51 per cent.
