A controversial greengrocer is back in the headlines after using a derogatory term to describe our Australian women’s soccer side.

St Bernards Fruit and Veg Market owner John Kapiris from Adelaide has posted a series of videos in recent weeks pledging his support for the Matildas competing in the FIFA Womens World Cup on home soil.

He took things a step too far on Tuesday in a bizarre four-minute video ahead of Australia’s World Cup semi-final showdown against England.

While brandishing a sword, he described the Matildas as ‘carpet munchers’, a derogatory term for gay women.

‘I want to be a part of it. God bless you, girls, youse are doing good,’ Mr Kapiris says towards the end of the video.

‘I don’t care if they are munching on the carpet … I do not care. I don’t give a f**k!

He doubled down after his wife Leannda expressed disapproval at his comments while filming.

‘I’m going to kill you,’ she tells him.

Her husband responding saying: ‘ No, I don’t care Leannda. I don’t care if they munch on the carpet.’

‘That’s good luck to them, man, if they want too much on the carpet and kick the goals, I don’t give a sh*t.

‘Good luck to you girls. Good luck to youse anyway. I’m not being disrespectful at all, that’s being carpet munchers.’

The video divided the internet with more than 17,000 views.

Mr Kapiris stands by his comments and told the Adelaide Advertiser the video was meant to be ‘a bit of fun’.

‘I’m definitely not homophobic,’ he said.

‘I was barracking for them (the Matildas) 100 per cent … I made a pizza for them.’

Mr Kapiris continued to double down, saying: ‘I do still believe we should roll out the red ‘CARPET ‘for them.’

The Matildas tackle Sweden in a play-off from bronze on Saturday night following their 3-1 semi-final loss against England.

The Matildas this week were branded by Pink Magazine as the gayest team at the Womens’s World Cup along with Brazil.

The UK-based news claimed said the Matildas had nine first-team players and three reserves who were in same-sex relationships, tying the squad with the Brazil team for the most openly lesbian players in the 2023 World Cup.

The offensive term John Kapiris used to describe the Matildas

‘Carpet muncher’ is a derogatory slang term used to refer to a lesbian or a woman who is attracted to other women. It’s important to note that this term is offensive and disrespectful. Using derogatory language to describe someone’s sexual orientation or identity is hurtful and contributes to a negative and discriminatory environment.
