Conyers’ son was arrested for suspected domestic violence

The son of Rep. John Conyers, who resigned from Congress this week amid sexual harassment accusations, was arrested in Los Angeles in February on suspicion of domestic violence, NBC News has learned.

John Conyers III, who his father endorsed for his Congressional seat as he departed, ‘body slammed [his girlfriend] on the bed and then on the floor where he pinned her down and spit on her,’ the police report said.

The junior Conyers rebutted her statement saying the girlfriend, who wasn’t named in the complaint, was using alcohol and marijuana, and tried to throw him out of the residence.

She then got into a pushing and shoving match with him.

A knife was also involved.

In her story to police, she said when she tried to call the policy, Conyers III grabbed her phone and followed her to the kitchen, where she grabbed a knife in self defense.

She told officers he took the knife from her, swung it at her and cut her arm.

He told police that his girlfriend threatened him with a knife and she cut herself when he tried to disarm her.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office didn’t charge the young Conyers citing a ‘lack of independent witnesses.’

The district attorney’s office concluded it ‘could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the victim’s injury was not accidentally sustained’ while Conyers was disarming his girlfriend, read paperwork from the case, according to NBC’s reporting.

The only injury to Conyers’ girlfriend was a small stab wound to her lower bicep, the network reported.

Both Conyers III and his girlfriend called 911 to report on the behavior of the other.

The congressman’s son was taken into custody and then released instead of having to pay the $50,000 bail.

This revelation may make his slide into his father’s congressional seat more difficult.

On Tuesday the elder Conyers officially resigned from Congress after being dogged by complaints of sexual misconduct.

In his goodbye remarks, made on Detroit’s WPZR radio, the longtime congressman said it was Conyers III who had his support to take over.

‘I have a great family here and especially in my oldest boy, John Conyers III, who incidentally, I endorse to replace me in my seat in Congress,’ the lawmaker said.

Conyers III sent out his own statement later saying he wasn’t yet in the race.

The younger Conyers said he would make a decision ‘once I have taken the time to thoroughly listen to our community.’

Conyers III will likely have competition in the Democratic primary in Detroit as Michigan state Sen. Ian Conyers, whose grandfather is Rep. Conyers’ brother, has already announced his plans to run for the seat.
