A Florida police department begrudgingly congratulated a person who warned motorists about a speed check-point this week.

Collier County Sheriff’s department said that officers were initially set up to conduct a speed enforcement operation in the Golden State Estates neighborhood after requests from residents.

However they were slightly bewildered after motorists adhered to the 45 mph limit after a ‘significant’ amount of time had passed.

A police department begrudgingly congratulated a Florida man who warned motorists about a speed check-point. They discovered a sign saying ‘police ahead’ near one of their patrols

They caught just one driver speeding on the day after responding to residents’ complaints about speeding motorists on April 17.

However, the mystery was solved when officers were leaving and found a piece of plywood with the words ‘police ahead’ spray-painted on it.

The plywood sign was placed leaning up against a speed-limit sign about a quarter of a mile from where they had set up the speed trap.

In a Facebook post explaining what happened, they wrote: ‘Well played, Anonymous Sign Artist. Well played. ‘Mystery solved,  #policeahead #slowdown #yougotus’.

In the comments section, people responded. ‘The sign maker is a hero,’ said one person.

‘Not all heroes wear capes,’ wrote another. ‘Way to be good sports about it. I find humor in y’all’s response,’ added another Facebook user.

Collier County Sheriff's Office wondered why they were catching so few drivers breaking the limit. They later discovered a 'police ahead' sign and gave kudos to the person responsible

Speed limits in Florida vary from 30 miles per hour in residential areas, unless otherwise stated, to 70 miles per hour on many parts of the Florida Turnpike and I-95.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies and police have come together in several U.S. states this Holiday weekend to help keep roads safer and ensure drivers and other road-users obey the law.

Easter is not the primary reason for the extra patrols. State police look at data to see which weekends have the greatest volume of traffic and increases in crashes and DUI arrests, and they choose these weekends to allocate extra officers.
