Police in Germany have launched a manhunt for an armed teenager after he targeted a girl at her school this morning, local media reports.

Riot cops and a helicopter are said to be searching for the suspect in the centre of the city of Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia.

The alleged attacker is believed to be between 16 and 18 years old and was not a student at the school.

Elite heavily armed police surrounded the Liselotte-Funcke School building, protecting the students from the attacker, BILD reports.

The girl who was being targeted is said to have been the boy’s ex-girlfriend, the German news site reported.

She is now safe and with cops, a police spokesperson said, adding that she is assisting with their investigation.

He is understood to have entered the school at around 8.30am this morning, before teachers saw him and alerted police.

All the school children are understood to be out of danger and are receiving support from authorities.
