Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski is mulling a Senate bid in New Hampshire, in part to help Donald Trump win the state in next year’s presidential election.

‘I am seriously looking at it,’ he told DailyMail.com in a text message about a challenge to incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

‘The president needs a strong supporter of his on the ticket in New Hampshire,’ he told Fox News. ‘New Hampshire is a state he lost by 2,700 votes, but having a strong, unified ticket in the state will help him be successful in 2020.’

Trump narrowly lost New Hampshire to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election although he did win the state’s in that year’s Republican primary contest.

He remains close to Lewandowski, who often visits him at the White House.

New Hampshire will be a critical state in the 2020 presidential campaign and Trump also touts the need for the Republican Party to maintain control of the Senate, which a Lewandowski victory would help achieve.

Lewandowski has a long history in the state – he ran unsuccessfully in 2012 for Windham, N.H., town treasurer; he managed Bob Smith’s unsuccessful 2002 Senate campaign; and he was serving as New Hampshire director for the Koch Brothers’ group Americans for Prosperity when Trump tapped him to manage his presidential campaign.

Lewandowski served as campaign manager from January 2015 to June 2016, when Paul Manafort took over.

At the Republican National Committee meeting taking place in Charlotte, North Carolina, there was much talk about recruiting Lewandowski to challenge Shaheen, a two-term Democratic senator and former governor of the state, WMUR reported.

‘Jeannie Shaheen has failed the people of New Hampshire by voting in lock step with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi,’ Lewandowski told WMUR in a statement. ‘The people of New Hampshire deserve better. If I run, I would be a voice for all the people of New Hampshire.’

Former New Hampshire House Speaker Bill O’Brien has already announced a Senate bid but Lewandowski would be favored to win the primary given his strong national profile, an ability to fundraise and an expected endorsement from President Trump.

Lewandowski will have a chance to talk to Trump about the race soon.

He’s flying with the president to Ohio Thursday night on Air Force One, where Trump has a campaign rally.

Trump also has a rally scheduled in Manchester, N.H., for August 15.
