Coronation Street fans blame ‘awful’ producer Iain MacLeod after FIVE cast members quit in three months

The soap has been rocked in recent weeks following the news that five cast members have quit.

And Coronation Street fans have firmly placed the blame on producer Iain MacLeod, who they have branded ‘awful’ and ‘disastrous’ in a slew of tweets.

It comes despite sources telling MailOnline that the soap boss is in no way responsible for the exits of five different cast members in the last three months, including actresses Kym Marsh and Faye Brookes.

Raging: Coronation Street fans have been furiously blaming producer Iain MacLeod in a slew of social media posts, after five cast members quit the soap in three months

Iain took over as Coronation Street’s producer in June following the departure of Kate Oates, and his storylines first appeared on screen in December.

His plots have been far lighted than the darker scenes fans saw under Kate’s leadership, which included Aidan Connor’s suicide and the murderous rampage of Pat Phelan.

But since the start of the year, five cast members have quit the show: Connie Hyde (who plays Gina Seddon), Bhavna Limbachia (Rana Habeeb), Kym Marsh (Michelle Connor), Tristan Gemmill (Robert Preston) and most recent Faye Brookes (Kate Connor).

So many departures have left die-hard fans of the soap reeling, and many have taken to Twitter to blame Iain with his lacklustre story lines.

One wrote: ‘And now Kate is leaving #CoronationStreet as well wouldn’t it have been nice for Kate and Rana to leave together? Wouldn’t it be nice to know what the f**k is going behind the scenes at Corrie?’

Another added: ‘Well done Iain MacLeod you sure have ruined Corrie well done sir did you ever ask yourself why all these actors want to leave well done Iain not!’

‘Corrie that’s what you get for having a pure disaster for your producer,’ a third posted.

A fourth also posted: ‘I won’t support Corrie in its current awful state with Iain as producer.’

However a Corrie source has told MailOnline that Iain is not to blame for so many stars decided to leave the soap, and the soap’s cast is ever-changing with characters constantly coming and going.

They said: ‘Corrie’s cast is the biggest it has ever been, and actors always come and go in a soap. Producers have recently cast Gemma’s brother and four members of the Bailey family.

‘Corrie is a great show to work on and everyone is very excited about Iain’s plans for the summer, there are some massive story lines coming up.

‘Sometimes actors want to try other things, sometimes story lines dictate that people will leave. There is no issue at all with Iain.’

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Coronation Street for comment.

It remains to be seen whether the exits of so many characters will tie together, especially as Robert remains a suspect in the Underworld Factory roof collapse.

His ex Michelle also suspected the Bistro boss after he was noticeable absent during the disaster, and Kate has also been grieving after her fiancé Rana was killed in the tragedy.

The true culprit of the factory collapse will be exposed in the coming weeks, as part of a huge storyline which will see a sinister new villain emerge on the cobbles.

Coronation Street continues on Wednesday 1st May at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
