Coronavirus Australia: Tasmania records its first case of Covid-19 in eight months

Tasmania records its first case of Covid in EIGHT months and immediately axes blockbuster AFL game due to go ahead with 10,000 fans

Tasmania has recorded its first case of coronavirus in eight months prompting health authorities to cancel an AFL game that would have held 10,000 people.

A traveller from New South Wales has tested positive for Covid-19 while in hotel quarantine in Launceston.

The 31-year-old man flew from NSW to Victoria before he boarded a flight to travel to Launceston on Monday.

The man was placed in hotel quarantine upon his arrival and was tested for coronavirus on Tuesday, but only began experiencing symptoms on his return to NSW on Wednesday.

The Collingwood and Hawthorn AFL blockbuster scheduled for this weekend at the  UTAS stadium in York Park in Launceston has been cancelled as a result of the Covid scare.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein reassured residents the positive case had been picked up in hotel quarantine and was not a case of community transmission.

He said the traveller had arrived in Launceston without an endorsed travel pass.
