BREAKING: Correction centre is forced into lockdown after a brawl erupts – forcing police to use tear gas as two prisoners are rushed to hospital

  • Major brawl broke out at Long Bay Correctional Centre in Sydney, on Sunday
  • Centre houses minimum and maximum security inmates is under lockdown 
  • Five patients were treated, and two of them have now been taken to hospital 

A major brawl has broken out at a correction centre which led to two prisoners being rushed to hospital.

Prison guards were forced to use tear gas in a bid to break up the fight at Long Bay Correctional Centre in Malabar, 12km southeast of Sydney, on Sunday around 1.30pm. 

The centre, which houses minimum and maximum security inmates, is now thought to be under lockdown. 

The incident occurred at Long Bay Correctional Centre at Malabar, Sydney on Sunday afternoon

Nine ambulance crews were deployed to the jail, as well as a specialist medical team.  

Five people are thought to have been injured in the brawl, according to 7News.

Two have since been taken to hospital for medical treatment.  

One is believed to have a puncture wound while another has a facial wound. 

The injured inmates were taken to separate hospitals, with one being taken to Prince of Wales and the other being transported to St Vincent’s hospitals.  

No staff are believed to have been injured in the incident. 

It’s understood the alternation had initially broken out in exercise yard of the facility.

It’s thought that seven inmates were involved in the incident in some capacity. 

All have been identified. 

Officers have also seized a number of makeshift weapons. 

It’s thought New South Wales police are investigating the incident.
