Cosmetic doctor shares the skincare mistakes we’re ALL making including changing products too quickly and forgetting SPF – and how to fix them

  • Dr Yalda Jamali, 31, is a cosmetic doctor and skin consultant with Skin Proud
  • She has noted three main skincare ‘mistakes’ she sees her clients making
  • They are exfoliating too often, not using SPF and changing routines too often

A cosmetic doctor has shared the three skincare mistakes we’re all making when it comes to how we apply our products – and how often – and the ‘essentials’ you should be spending your hard-earned cash on.

Dr Yalda Jamali is a Cosmetic Doctor and Skin Consultant with Skin Proud, and sees a great number of patients accidentally doing damage to their skin barrier by exfoliating too often, not applying the correct amount of SPF and changing routines too frequently.

The 31-year-old doctor living in Sydney told FEMAIL there is a simple way to avoid making these mistakes, but first it’s important to acknowledge that you’re making them.

TOO MUCH MANUAL EXFOLIATION

These include scrubs and they are generally too harsh, especially for general use.

‘Nowadays there are many great chemical exfoliants on the market that include AHA, BHAs and PHAs which exfoliate without compromising the skin barrier as much if used correctly,’ Dr Yalda explained.

‘You certainly don’t want to be using both a mechanical and a chemical exfoliant.’

NOT ENOUGH SPF

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

Not only is it important to apply sunscreen every morning before you leave the house, it also needs to be re-applied every few hours over makeup.

‘This is of greater importance in the summer months when living in a country like Australia,’ Dr Yalda said.

One teaspoon is required for your face and neck every time you apply.

CHANGING SKINCARE ROUTINES TOO FREQUENTLY

We need to be giving products enough time to see whether they are ‘working’ for our skin or not.

‘With so many skincare products on the market, I can see why this one may be a challenge,’ she said.

‘But chopping and changing our routine too frequently will make it impossible to see which product works best for us and we can even risk our skin barrier.’

If you are new to skincare, you want to start with a few products and build up slowly.

HOW TO BUILD A SKINCARE REGIME

Morning

1. Cleanse (Skin Proud Velvet Cloud cleanser)

2. Antioxidant serum with ingredients such as Vitamin C or Niacinamide (Skin Proud Bright Boost serum could slot here nicely if your skin likes Vit C)

3. Moisuriser if you have normal to dry skin

4. And lastly SPF

Evening

1. Double cleanse if you wear makeup, I prefer using an oil based cleanser first

2. Tone (Skin Proud Detox Tonic)

3. Retinoid-based products (such as the Skin Proud Recharge serum)

4. Moisturiser

Dr Yalda recommends splurging on skincare that contains active ingredients that matter most to you and your skin concern.

Usually these include Retinoids, Vitamin C and exfoliating acids.

‘You can find very good and affordable alternatives to high-end cleansers and moisturisers in your local drug store.’
