Cosmopolitan awards the influential women of the year 

It is that time of year again when Cosmopolitan’s Women of the Year Awards are announced, with more than 49,000 votes being cast.

The winning women were chosen by Cosmo readers and awards were handed out at a lavish luncheon in Sydney. 

Across nine categories, the winners encompassed social media stars – including Tammy Hembrow – beauty bloggers, like Lauren Curtis, and sportswomen, including Jess Smith.

In the past, the Cosmo Women of the Year Awards have carved a name for themselves for recognising some of the industry’s biggest names.

High-profile celebrity nominees this year included Home and Away actress, Pia Miller, singer Samantha Jade, and 13 Reasons Why actress Katherine Langford, who won the performers category. 

Some of the most well known people who received recognition this year were beauty YouTuber Lauren Curtis, fitness social media star Tammy Hembrow and paralympian Jessica Smith.

Tammy Hembrow is one of Australia’s biggest social media stars and walked away with an award for the social media fitness category.

With over seven million Instagram followers, the fit-fluencer has an account that rivals some of the biggest fitness names in the business.

The mother-of-two beat tough competition from the likes of travel photo queen Pia Muehlenbeck and fitness guru Ashy Bines for the award.

Another well-deserved winner was Jessica Smith, the Paralympian, author and motivational speaker. She won the game changer award.

* TV/Radio personality of the year: Sophie Monk, KIIS radio host and The Bachelorette star

* Game changer of the year: Jessica Smith, Paralympian, author and motivational speaker

* Fashion designer of the year: Yiota and Thessy Kouzoukas, Sabo Skirt 

* Sportswoman of the year: Joany Badenhorst, Paralympic snowboarder 

Born without a left arm, Jessica Smith represented Australia in swimming at the Paralympic Games.

She was forced to retire at 21 after a battle with eating disorders but instead of letting that get her down, Jessica uses her experiences to help others.

She has created the award-winning social media campaign ‘Join the Revolution’, promoting positive body image and educating young girls. 

Although she wasn’t able to make the event because she is 39 weeks pregnant, she let it be known how thrilled she was to receive the recognition in an Instagram caption she posted soon after the announcement. 

‘I am so honoured and beyond grateful to everyone who voted for me! Thank you all so much!,’ she said.

‘Thank you to Cosmo for creating such a great platform for women to be recognised and congratulated for the work they’re doing within the community. 

‘Awards such as this just ignite my determination even more!! Stay tuned over the next few months… understanding diversity and acceptance will ALWAYS be my driving force to create positive change!’.

Another winner was Australia’s loved beauty YouTuber, Lauren Curtis, who unsurprisingly took out the beauty social media star of the year award.

The 24-year-old has over three million subscribers with people from all over the world tuning into her channel to listen to her beauty advice.
