Council is slammed for selling ‘sexist’ pink hats

  • ‘Sexist’ hat for sale at Tatton Park in Cheshire sparks outrage on social media
  • The garish pink hat is emblazoned with the words ‘FUTURE FOOTBALLERS WIFE’
  • Twitter users are now calling for the council-run site to stop selling the headgear

A ‘sexist’ hat has sparked outrage after the garish, pink article was photographed in a council-run gift shop.

The ‘tacky’ hat is coloured pink and emblazoned on it are the words ‘FUTURE FOOTBALLERS WIFE’.

Eagle-eyed users were also quick to hone in on the fact that the apostrophe was missing from ‘footballer’s’.

Spotter Laura Gross took to Twitter to publicly complain about the offending headgear, arguing ‘young female visitors deserve better’.

However, Ms Gross incorrectly blamed the National Trust for the embarrassing product, believing the organisation was responsible for managing the historic estate in Cheshire.

She wrote: ‘Hey @nationaltrust – this stupid hat is for sale at Tatton Park. Your young female visitors deserve better merch (+ better grammar)’.

Though Trust members do get free entry into the stately mansion and gardens, it is managed by Cheshire East Council.

The hat has sparked outrage on social media with many calling for it to be removed from sale.

Marion McLean wrote: ‘Really? Is that something they should aspire to nowadays?’

Amie-Rose Long commented: ‘Great job calling this #everydaysexism out.’

Lorrie Hartshorn added: ‘it’s not just sexist rubbish, it’s tacky as hell. Get it gone!’

Responding to the furore, the National Trust’s Twitter account said: ‘Hi Laura, thanks for flagging, please could you pop an email over to the team at Tatton Park?

‘We will of course be contacting them about this, but it helps to have a visitor flag this up too.’

A spokesman told MailOnline: ‘Tatton Park is not run by the National Trust. It is independently financed and managed by Cheshire East Council.’

The local authority has been approached for comment.
