Countess of Wessex is presented with a bouquet of flowers

The Countess of Wessex looked delighted to meet students as she visited a secondary school on the second and final day of her Sierra Leone tour.

Sophie, 55, was given a warm reception as she was greeted by youngsters and teachers at the Russell Technical Secondary School on Thursday.

Sophie looked chic in vibrant floral silk trousers and a navy blouse, finishing the look with wooden platform heels and a white snakeskin clutch bag.

The mother-of-two was all smiles as she was presented with a bouquet of flowers upon her arrival by 14-year-old student Salimatu Kargbo.

She kept her look natural, wearing her blonde locks in a ponytail, adding a touch of mascara and pink lipstick while accessorising with gold earrings.

Sophie then joined a group of students underneath a tree in the school yard to observe a life skills lesson – where she learned about sexual and gender based violence before presenting a radio as a gift to the class.

The royal, who is married to the Queen’s youngest son, also attended a discussion with members of the school safety committee before giving a passionate speech.

On her second day of her Sierra Leone visit, Sophie also met mothers and their newborns at Tombo Health Clinic – which offers family planning and maternal care services to women outside Freetown.

The visit is to see how investments in education and family planning are helping to empower girls and women to have greater choice and control over their bodies and lives, and to achieve their aspirations.

She changed outfits for the visit, opting for an almost identical brown blouse, with longer sleeves, and a pale blue silk skirt.

She was given a tour of the Aberdeen Women’s Clinic in Freetown, where she met with sexual violence survivors.

Sophie is currently visiting Sierra Leone at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for a whistlestop two day visit.

For her first appearance of the quick visit, Sophie was visibly moved as she made an emotional visit to a peace museum.

She was set to undertake a programme of engagements in Freetown, focusing on addressing sexual and gender based violence, supporting survivors, and championing women’s role in peacebuilding.

As she arrived at the Sierra Leone Peace Museum in Freetown, she was warmly greeted by Binta Mansaray, Registrar of the Residual Special Court.

The Countess appeared visibly moved as she studied archive material in the museum, including clothing worn by the CDF, a civil militia, during the civil war.

Almost 20 years after the end of the 1991-2002 civil war, the royal heard how Sierra Leone has successfully transitioned to a sustained peace following the conflict.

As part of the visit, she learned  about the role of the Special Court and Truth and Reconciliation Commission in bringing justice to survivors of the conflict, including survivors of sexual violence.

She was also shown the archive testimony of those involved in the civil war in Sierra Leone, both perpetrators and victims of violence, which is stored in boxes as part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The royal went on to join roundtable discussions with civil society members on current societal issues and the continued violence faced by women and girls in Sierra Leone.

She also heard how efforts are being made to tackle these issues – particularly reducing stigma – which is helping more women to report incidents of rape.

The mother-of-two also met with women from across government, the armed forces, civil society and communities to celebrate the role they are playing at home and abroad in advocating for peace in other regions.
