Country House sensationally wins the Kentucky Derby after first-place finisher Maximum Security is DISQUALIFIED following steward’s inquiry for impeding other riders

  • Country House won the 2019 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Louisville on Saturday
  • The long-shot horse, with odds of 65-1, was declared the winner after Maximum Security was disqualified for impeding other riders in a stewards’ call  
  • It’s the first time ever that the winner has been changed for a foul on the track 
  • 150,000 spectators were forced to wait 20 minutes for the decision to be made

Country House has won the 2019 Kentucky Derby.

The long-shot horse, with odds of 65-1, was declared the winner of the world-famous $3 million race on Saturday, after Maximum Security was sensationally disqualified in a stewards’ call. 

Maximum Security crossed the line first, but its championship titled was revoked after stewards decided that the thoroughbred had impeded other riders by chaning lanes at the last minute. 

The 150,000 spectators who had descended on Churchill Downs in Louisville were forced to wait for more than 20 minutes for a winner to be declared – as officials watched back over race footage. 

Shortly after 7 pm, it was declared thoroughbred favorite Maximum Security had been disqualified for a foul. 

Country House was declared the winner, in a shocking upset that marked the first time in the races 145 year history that the victor had been changed.
