Couple, 53 and 49, who were found dead at home together are named as married husband and wife

Police have named a married couple who were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Officers were called to an address in Shrewsbury Crescent, Sunderland, on Thursday evening, where they found two bodies.

Northumbria Police said Kay Martin, 49, who lived at the address, was murdered.

The force said Alan Martin, 53, of Gardiner Square, Sunderland, also died and there was not believed to be any third party involvement in his death. 

Northumbria Police said they were married.

Forensic teams gathered evidence at the address over the weekend.

Detectives investigating the case are not looking for anyone else in connection with Mrs Martin’s murder and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Bond said: ‘This is a tragic case which has resulted in the deaths of Alan Martin and Kay Martin.

He also reassured residents living nearby that the killing was an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public
