Couple adopted two children before having their own biologically

A couple who decided to adopt before having their own biological children have revealed it’s the ‘perfect way to grow their family’.

Aimee, 27, and James Cooper, 29, from the West Midlands, who now have two children thanks to the adoption process, decided it would be easier for adopted youngsters to settle into a home without other kids.

‘Adoption just seemed like the perfect way to grow our family and give children a loving home who might not have one otherwise,’ Aimee said, speaking to The Mirror.

She also revealed the couple hope their children ‘never remember the day they were told they were adopted.’

Aimee couldn’t remember a time when she didn’t want to adopt, and when she met James at 20, she quickly told him about her ideal method for having children.

Knowing how much this meant to her, James agreed and the couple started the adoption process 12 months into their marriage.

‘The process was full of highs and lows,’ she explained to the publication. ‘When you’re pregnant, you’ve got a bump to look at and people talk to you about it, but when you’re adopting a lot of people don’t know what to say.’

Soon, Aimee and James were matched with an eight-month-old boy, whose mother couldn’t give him the stability he needed and who was pregnant again.

Having registered as being open to adopting siblings, the duo went on to adopt both the boy and his little sister.

The little girl first spent six months in foster care – as this is required by law to give birth parents a chance to prove they are capable of looking after the child.

‘When we met our little boy, Casey*, it was love at first sight. When the foster carer said, “Your mummy and daddy are here,” I wanted to cry,’ said Aimee.

Following a transition week, the couple brought their youngster home in November 2017, before gearing up for baby number two, Ceira*, three-and-a-half months later.

For the first six months, Aimee and James were visited by her birth parents three times a week.

And while the early years childcare worker confessed that fostering a newborn is always risky as parents could change their mind, she was confident that this family was unlikely to make the necessary changes needed by the court.

Eventually, the couple were allowed to adopt Ceira and complete their family-of-four.

Soon afterwards, Casey and Ceira’s biological mother was pregnant again and the duo were asked to consider adopting the child.

However, Aimee and James knew they couldn’t cope with another little one.

The parents said that when their two youngsters are older, they can contact their other siblings, and even their biological mother and father if they wish to.

And they are using storybooks about adoption to ensure the truth ‘never feels like a shock’.
