Couple spend £4,000 to transform their home back to the 1970’s.

A young NHS worker and her partner have got a headstart on the return of the Winter of Discontent by spending £4,000 to transform their home back to the 1970’s – complete with original patterned wallpaper and vintage furniture.

Kyrie Jagger, 33, whose even her wardrobe fits in with the era – has stepped back in time with her style and home décor – something she has been working on since last September.

It comes as rising natural gas prices, an energy network ‘not fit for purpose’ and a shortage of lorry drivers are creating a ‘perfect storm’ to cripple the UK, experts warned.

The price of wholesale gas has surged by 250% since the beginning of the year and added 70% just since August as demand increases while the economy opens up, according to figures from Oil & Gas UK.

The project has cost around £4000 so far, consisting of original patterned wallpaper and vintage 1970s furniture.

‘We didn’t ever have a plan, but it has all come together so well,’ said Kyrie. ‘We both share a love for the décor of the 70’s and it has sort of been like our lockdown project.

‘Andy has been amazing with the decorating, and I have often sourced the furniture, we are a good team when it comes to design.’

BREAKDOWN OF COSTS

Sofa: £900

Wallpaper total: £100

Paintings: £400

Furniture and decorative items: £2600

The content of the house has been sourced from all over the UK, such as car boots and charity shops, with the couple keen to keep things as original as possible.

She added: ‘It has not been as expensive as first thought; we try to look for the best prices as buying a house requires most of your savings.’

‘We have found a lot of items from car boot sales, flea markets, charity shops and websites like eBay and Facebook Marketplace.

‘I have actually been noticing prices going recently so it can be tough to find things for the right prices, but we check most days.’

Kyrie gained a lot of inspiration from her grandparent’s house, which used to feature a lot of original furniture.

She explained: ‘They had a lot of G Plan branded stuff and Tique furniture, which was the exact sort of style we have tried to emulate.

‘It is all so well made it holds up even today as just timeless furniture.

‘At this moment in time, like every piece of furniture is original apart from our sofa and bed which we are in the process of looking to replace.

‘We do also have a modern TV and computers as well as it can be very hard to be entirely authentic!’

Kyrie’s favourite room of the house so far is the bedroom, which was designed all around the wallpaper.

THE 1978 WINTER OF DISCONTENT:

Rubbish piled high in the streets and rats ran around in Leicester Square as dustbin men and other public sector workers went on strike to support a pay rise demand.

Hospitals were in chaos because cleaners and other ancillary staff joined the most widespread withdrawal of labour since the General Strike of 1926.

Parts of the country were left without an ambulance service for 24 hours as the army was drafted in to provide a skeleton service.

Patients went untreated and even the dead were left unburied, as council grave-diggers took what was quaintly referred to as ‘industrial action’.

Jim Callaghan’s Labour government refused demands of increases of 30 per cent and more for public workers.

She added: ‘ One of the first things we did was find this amazing pink, orange and brown garish pattern wallpaper, which I adore.

‘All of our wallpaper is original so it’s so hard to find.’

Kyrie’s love for the 70’s first began at a young age, with her parents playing a lot of the classic 70’s hits when she was growing up.

She said: ‘To this day, Queen are still my favourite band. They are just an absolute staple for all music lovers.

‘This was certainly what gave me my first insight into the era, and over time I just learned to love it more.

‘Both mine and Andy’s homes were very minimalistic in design growing up, so we almost rebelled against the designs we were used to and the love for 70’s aesthetic evolved over time.’

Kyrie also keeps a wardrobe of original 70’s clothing, which she frequently wears.

She added: ‘I love the clothing and try to source a lot of original 70’s clothing as well.

‘I believe you have got to truly immerse yourself in the era.

‘The sense of freedom, the colour and the fashion have all been a major influence on my life.’

The couple’s friends and families have had mixed feelings when coming to visit the retro home.

Kyrie explained: ‘A few guests that visit do not really mention anything about the décor, and we think our parents get reminded of their parents houses, so they aren’t so keen on it.

‘However, most of our friends love it. They are normally surprised with how good it is in real life.’
