Coventry wellwishers raise thousands for hit-and-run boys

Wellwishers have raised more than £20,000 to pay for the funerals of two young brothers killed in a hit-and-run smash.

Corey and Casper Platt-May, aged six and two, were run over in MacDonald Road in Stoke, Coventry, on Thursday while out with their mother, who was unharmed.

The boys lived just around the corner from the crash scene with their parents Louise and Reece, and two older brothers Connor and Cooper.

Louise had been holding Corey’s hand and pushing Casper in a toy Mini Cooper.

The youngsters were taken to hospital with severe injuries and later passed away.

Now a fundraising page set up to help pay for the youngsters’ funerals has raised an enormous £20,795 – more than ten times the original target.

The page, set up by Lauren Dooley, raised more than £16,000 within 48 hours and thanks donors for their ‘unbelievable amount of support’.

Robert Brown, 53, and his fiancee Gwendoline Harrison, 41, are accused of two counts of dangerous driving.

Brown, of Wyken, Coventry, also faces charges of driving while disqualified, no insurance and otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Harrison, also of Wyken, faces a further allegation of common assault.

The pair appeared at Coventry Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.

Bald-headed Brown and Harrison, who had dark curly hair, both wore grey T-shirts and appeared in the dock only to confirm their name, date of birth and address.

The case against them was adjourned by chair of the magistrates’ bench, John Martin, until a further hearing via videolink at Warwick Crown Court on March 22.

Shortly after his son’s alleged killers appeared in court, Corey and Casper’s father released a touching video of his ‘angels’ playing football together.

The boys’ mother Louise Platt-May said: ‘Corey was an amazing boy. He never kept still, always had to be doing something and coming up with new ideas of things to do.

‘He loved school more than any kid I know. His favourite subject was maths. But his main passion in life was his football.

‘He has been playing for a local team since he was four but since the day he could hold a ball he was never without one.

‘He will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.’

Paying tribute to Casper, she said: ‘Casper was a cheeky little boy, always getting into trouble and driving his brothers crazy.

‘But he was so loving and caring and constantly told his family how much he loved them. He loved walking everywhere with his wellies and splashing in the puddles.

‘His smile could light up any room and he will be so so missed by all who knew him.’
