  • 200 community groups will hold charity BBQs this weekend in QLD, SA and WA

Bunnings say their famous sausage sizzles will return to three more states this weekend after it was removed during the coronavirus pandemic.

The sausage sizzle will return to selected stores in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia after their debut in the Northern Territory and Tasmania on July 11.

Bunnings banned their iconic community event on March 18 at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in Australia.

Community groups who were already booked in but had their events cancelled were given $500 gift cards by Bunnings to help with fundraising.

Deb Poole, the company’s chief operating officer, said: ‘Earlier this month we were excited to bring sausage sizzles back to Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

‘Community groups did a fantastic job adapting to the new physically-distanced layout and hygiene measures designed to keep everyone safe.

‘We know community groups and customers in other states are just as keen to see them return, so we’re really excited to be bringing them back to Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia this weekend.

HOW BUNNINGS WILL MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING AT SAUSAGE SIZZLES

  • Separate ordering and pick-up points to allow for 1.5 metres’ physical distancing
  • Increased cleaning processes and hygiene requirements
  • Increased signage to guide customers
  • Additional team members rostered to encourage physical distancing

‘While our community groups are taking a number of extra precautions, what hasn’t changed is the great feeling of supporting a local community group and the unmistakable taste of an Aussie sausage, bread and sauce.’

The reintroduction of the sausage sizzle in the Northern Territory and Tasmania were used as test runs to establish social distancing policies.

Around 200 groups are booked in across the three states to have their fundraising barbecues this weekend.

The return of the sausage sizzle is still being discussed in the remaining states, New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT.

Campbell Pudney, from Wanneroo Sports and Social Club, said earlier this month his organisation is booked to host a sausage sizzle in early August in Western Australia.

He told 6PR Breakfast it makes a huge difference to local sporting clubs.

‘Our finances are very dependent on these sausage sizzles,’ he said.

However he admitted it could change at any moment with the precarious nature of the coronavirus pandemic.

One listener to the radio show expressed concern that the sausage sizzles would be ‘coming back too soon’ and was concerned about the handling of food.
