Daniel Andrews has renewed calls for Sydneysiders to be locked into their suburbs with a ‘ring of steel’ to stop the spread of the city’s Delta Covid-19 outbreak.

The hardline Victorian premier on Monday hit out at New South Wales authorities for pursuing a ‘nuanced’ approach in locking down some of the Harbour City’s suburbs more than others.

‘We tried it last year and it didn’t work against last year’s coronavirus let alone Delta,’ he said as he announced Victoria’s sixth lockdown would end on time on Tuesday.

‘We wish them well but you are directly asking me would I go to a more quote- unquote “nuanced approach”. No, because it wouldn’t work.’

He said his NSW counterpart Gladys Berejiklian’s strategy of further locking down certain suburbs inevitably led to even wider areas needing the same restrictions.

‘We will not be instituting partial lockdowns of one LGA because what starts as one dishes up as a 16 or 17 reasonably quickly.’

The criticism came after Ms Berejiklian on Sunday announced 13 suburbs in the Penrith local government area would face even tighter stay-at-home restrictions.
