FOX NFL analyst and three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth eviscerated Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones for reportedly leaving his head coach Mike McCarthy in the dark when trading for Trey Lance.
Jones did not alert McCarthy, nor starting quarterback Dak Prescott, before acquiring the third-string quarterback for a fourth-round draft pick in a trade with San Francisco last Friday.
Though, McCarthy more recently told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram; ‘I was involved in the evaluation, but the actual business component of it I am not involved.’
Speaking on his weekly Stinkin Truth podcast with host Mike Evans, Schlereth gave his typically unfiltered and forthright opinion on Jones.
‘This is why the Cowboys will never win s***,’ Schlereth said. ‘Because Jerry Jones can’t help himself. You think about Jerry Jones; you’re gonna go out there and you’re gonna make a trade for a guy without talking to anybody else in your organization.

HC Mike McCarthy was — according to Jones — not spoken to about the move the day prior
‘I really don’t care if you involve your quarterback in it or not. But to not involve your head coach. What does it say about your head coach? “Hey guys, I know he’s your head coach, but he truly has no authority within this organization.
“‘So, you don’t have to listen to him. You don’t have to pay attention because the buck stops with me. Your coach doesn’t have the authority to fire you. I do.”‘
Schlereth believes the Cowboys cannot and will not win anything of immense consequence if Jones’ continues his unique approach to owning and managing his franchise.
‘You cannot win in the National Football League that way… the fact that Jerry Jones consistently emasculates his coaches, consistently usurps their authority, consistently, essentially blatantly disregards them, is one of the big reasons the Cowboys won’t win anything.’
As ever, sportsbooks and media outlets across the nation are high on the Cowboys to compete for the NFC title given its elite defense and explosive offense.
‘Oh, they may win a bunch of regular season games because they’re talented. They’ll get in the playoffs and they’ll s*** in their helmets like they do every year. That’s the Cowboys.’
Dallas has not played in the NFC Championship Game since 1996 – coincidentally, its last win at that stage of the playoffs.
Big D has an over/under of 9.5 games among most sportsbooks. Dallas has its yearly matchups with its divisional rivals, in addition to the NFC West, AFC East, Detroit, Carolina and the Chargers.
