Crafty Chinese shoppers are caught stockpiling containers of baby formula by exploiting a loophole

Chinese shoppers are caught stockpiling containers of baby formula from a Melbourne Woolworths by blatantly exploiting two-tin limit

  • The customers exploited the two-tin per transaction limit by shopping in rounds

A group of Chinese shoppers have been shamed online for stockpiling containers of baby formula by exploiting Woolworths’ two-tin limit.

Footage taken by a customer at the Docklands Woolworths in Melbourne showed members of the group buying the tins of baby formula two at a time, before storing them in bags outside of the shop and returning for more.

The video was shared to Facebook on December 21 with the caption: ‘Law needs to be changed to two per day rather than two per transaction. This is an absolute joke.’

Woolworths and Coles both have a two-tin baby formula limit due to the popularity of ‘daigou shoppers’ buying the product in bulk to sell for a profit online to China.

But shoppers have begun exploiting that rule, simply buying two tins at a time and storing the baby formula outside.

Footage caught a group of Chinese shoppers avoiding the Woolworths two-tin limit on baby formula by purchasing in rounds at the Docklands store on Saturday

The footage showed how the shoppers exploited the two-tin limit and caught a row of women buying the baby formula at the Woolworths self checkout.

The video then followed a man clutching his receipt and shopping bag outside of the shop where he added the tins to a massive collection of the product.

Full shopping bags, carts and wheelie bags sat on the pavement and were seen to be filled to the brim with formula tins.

Several shoppers were caught arranging their supply before going back into the Woolworths to purchase additional tins.

The man who posted the video, Andy Frances, shared his outrage and said: ‘This isn’t about the people taking the cans in the video below. This is about Australian Mums and Dads that can’t get their babies preferred formula.’

He also criticised the businesses responsible for the distribution of the formulas and called for Woolworths and A2 Milk to ‘Show some leadership and effect a change.’

A Change.org petition to enforce a two tin per day limit amassed over 500 signatures and stated that ‘The issue of baby formula being purchased and shipped overseas has gotten out of control.’

A Woolworths spokesperson said that if parents noticed that baby formula was out of stock they should notify a staff member.

‘We have a two tin transaction limit on baby formula in place and our store teams work hard to ensure customers have access to stock when they need it,’ they said.
