Cricket Australia begs South Africa fans to end vile abuse against wives and girlfriends

Cricket Australia has begged South Africa to stop with its torrent of personal abuse aimed at Australian cricket players and their families.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann lodged a formal complaint about the ‘disgraceful’ behaviour of spectators after two days of vile taunts targeted at the team, particularly against David Warner.

‘I think it’s been disgraceful,’ Mr Lehmann said during a press conference.

‘You’re talking about abuse of various players and their families and personal abuse, it’s not on at a cricket ground anywhere around the world, not just here, it shouldn’t happen.’

It comes as a staggering 10 people were ejected from Newlands stadium for the abuse on Friday and and another three were kicked out on day one for wearing t-shirts that attacked the Warner family.

Mr Lehmann said the spectator sledging had crossed the line from friendly banter to plain disrespect.

‘You can have the banter, that’s fine, banter is good-natured fun by crowds but they’ve gone too far here,’ he said.

‘We’ve written to Cricket South Africa, Cricket Australia have done that, we’ll see their response, but it’s been poor. We’ll see what happens, hopefully something.’

South African fans have reportedly obtained a list of the players’ wives and girlfriends and are using derogatory language.

Warner has become a popular target for the abuse, both from spectators and players.

The Australian vice-captain was locked in a heated exchange after he was bowled out on Friday when a fan allegedly made a remark about his wife Candice.

The man taunted and hurled abuse at Warner as he walked past the member’s pavilion.

Mr Lehman confirmed the sledging against Warner was ‘personal and it was poor and he wasn’t the only one’.

Warner was also involved in an off-field bust-up with South African player Quinton de Kock, where a personal remark was again made about his wife.

CCTV footage from the players’ tunnel showed Warner and de Kock involved in a fiery exchange.

The video shows Warner being restrained by team-mates Usman Khawaja and Nathan Lyon as he directs a verbal barrage at de Kock.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis then emerges from the dressing room to try to calm the situation, followed by Australia captain Steve Smith and other Australian players.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson said: ‘Following the end of the second session there was an incident involving David Warner and Quinton de Kock on return to the changerooms.

‘The incident was discussed between the two team managers and the match referee last night and it is now in the hands of the on-field umpires and match referee.

‘Both teams were reminded by the match referee of the spirit in which the game should be played.’
