Crime scene outside Crown Casino in Melbourne

A major police operation is underway at Melbourne’s Crown Casino.

Swarms of armed police surrounded the building about 5pm on Wednesday.

People in and around the casino were evacuated from the area, causing mass chaos in Southbank, Melbourne’s centre.

Police are reportedly using tape to cordon off the building from the public, resulting in large groups of patrons and staff gathering outside.

Authorities have not yet released any information about the operation.

A Victoria Police spokesman said ‘it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage’.

A Crown Casino spokesperson confirmed there was an incident involving one person.

They said the ‘issue’ had been resolved peacefully and was now a Victoria Police issue.

Victoria Roads said Clarendon Street was closed in both directions between Flinders Street and Whiteman Street.

VicRoads urged motorists to use alternative routes to avoid the area.

More to come.
