  • Romero says there’s no need to panic ahead of game against Manchester United

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has insisted that ‘there’s no real need to panic’ despite the club’s inconsistent start to the season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are in sixth place in the Premier League having won five and lost four of their games so far.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by West Ham last weekend but Romero, who is on loan from Atalanta, believes Nuno is the right man to take them forward, describing him as ‘a very calm manager’.

Romero told Sky Sports: ‘Of course, after every defeat you are left feeling bitter but we’re already looking ahead.

‘The group remains strong and united in what we’re trying to achieve and we’re already focused on reacting to the setback.

‘From my time working under Nuno, I’ve already learned he’s a very calm manager. He brings a lot of calmness to the dressing room given we’ve only had a short time working together as a group.

‘There’s no real need to panic given we’re inside the top six positions in the league and it’s very tight from fourth place downwards. We’re focused on giving the best version of ourselves as we know with clear heads we can bring back a positive momentum.’

Tottenham host Manchester United on Saturday in an intriguing game, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looking to respond following their recent struggles.

Although Tottenham are competing in the Europa Conference League this season, Romero stressed that his aim is to eventually be involved in the Champions League.

Tottenham beat Burnley 1-0 in the Carabao Cup and will now be looking to take three points against United.

Romero said: ‘We’ll prepare for Manchester United in the best way possible in order to win in front of our supporters. I came here to compete for trophies and to compete in the Champions League and that is the level I feel we should all be aspiring to reach. In order to achieve this target, we have to remain united.’

Argentina international Romero has made ten appearances so far since arriving at Tottenham.

Nuno’s side started the season well, winning their first three league games, but they then suffered three defeats in succession and have found consistency hard to come by.

Tottenham have the option to sign Romero on a permanent basis next summer.

Having started out at Belgrano, Romero joined Genoa in 2018 and then signed for Juventus, but didn’t play a game for them, instead remaining at Genoa on loan before heading to Atalanta, who he later joined permanently.
