Eagle-eyed fans spot and wonder why Cristiano Ronaldo paints his toenails black as he is pictured enjoying some downtime in the sauna… but there’s a practical reason why the Al-Nassr star – and MMA fighters – do so
- Cristiano Ronaldo shared a picture online where he is relaxing in the sauna
- Eagle-eyed fans though were curious as to why he painted his toenails black
- There is a good reason why he and other top athletes decide to paint their nails
Cristiano Ronaldo regularly shares pictures where he is seen enjoying his downtime, but his most recent photo caught some eagle-eyed fans by surprise.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid shared a picture of himself in a sauna as he recovers from his excursions with Saudi side Al-Nassr.
Typically, the picture showed off his incredible physique as he sits with his hands grasped looking thoughtful in the image shared on Instagram.
But fans noticed something unusual in that his toenails were painted black, with one fan replying to Ronaldo’s post: ‘Did I miss something or everyone else missed it. Did Ronaldo paint his toe nails?’
There is a good reason as to why he does this and it’s for the same reason why many top athletes such as MMA fighters also paint their nails.

It’s not the first time as Ronaldo was spotted with painted toenails in a picture shared by Francis Ngannou
According to a source via German outlet Bild, athletes paint their nails or cover it with a protective layer to prevent their nails from fungi and bacteria.
They said: ‘Many top athletes do this to protect their nails from fungi and bacteria when they are stuck in sweaty shoes for hours. Even Mike Tyson.’
It’s not the first time that he has been pictured with his toe nails painted black.
Back in January, MMA fighter Francis Ngannou posted a picture with Ronaldo where they are seen embracing and the Portuguese star’s painted nails are visible.

Fighters such as former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski would do the same during when stepping into action.
It’s another sign of a player who has always looked to go the extra mile in proving himself as one of the best of all time.
The 38-year-old – who has won five Ballon d’or trophies – has scored 11 goals in 12 games since joining Saudi side Al-Nassr after his acrimonious split with Manchester United.
But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League, and he recently was unable to find the back of the net in their clash with Al Feiha.

After the match Ronaldo had a furious rant that saw him storm off the pitch and bark at opposition players that they ‘don’t want to play’
The former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus star then marched straight down the tunnel at full-time.
Spanish outlet Marca claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo felt as though former Al-Nassr boss Rudy Garcia could get more out of his team mates.
The Saudi club confirmed on Thursday that Garcia had left the club ‘by mutual agreement’ and that their Under 19 coach Dinko Jelicic will take over as their new head coach.
Al-Nassr, who occupy second spot in the table, resume their league campaign when they host Al Hilal on Tuesday.
