The Danish royals put on an elegant display as they attended the opening of the ‘Mary and the Crown Princesses’ exhibition at Koldinghus today.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, who is celebrating her 50th birthday on February 5, stunned in a recycled blush pink coat by Danish designer Claes Iversen as she stepped out alongside husband Prince Frederik this afternoon.

The mother-of-four previously wore her striking pink coat with a matching hat for the official opening of the Danish Parliament in Copenhagen in 2019.

The exhibition has been organised in connection with Crown Princess Mary’s monumental birthday and features portraits of the current crown princess and her four latest predecessors, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the history of the Glücksborg dynasty.

She completed today’s stylish look with mocha coloured heels and swept half of her glossy brunette hair back to reveal pretty drop earrings.

Crown Princess Mary appeared in good spirits alongside a polished Prince Frederik, who opted for a navy suit paired with a blue and red tie.

Elsewhere, Frederick’s aunt Princess Benedikte, 77, looked chic in a checked jacket with a matching hat and black skirt.

She opted for a classic crimson lipstick which appeared to have been coordinated with her nails, while accessorizing with pearl earrings.

Other items on display include royal jewellery, Queen Louise’s writing desk and Princess Alexandrine’s pram.

Ahead of her landmark birthday, Australian-born Crown Princess Mary recently reflected on what she admires most about the queens before her, saying:  ‘As a crown princess, you are confronted with the challenge of having to assume a very central position in a foreign country.

‘You must master a new language and a new culture, while many eyes are watching you – and there is a strong feeling that there is much to live up to. But, also great opportunities to shape your own role.’

Museum director for the King’s Collection Thomas C. Thulstrup led a tour of the exhibition, which included a surprise of over 100 children singing birthday songs in the Slotsgården.

Today’s outing follows the recent release of new portraits of Princess Mary posing with her husband Prince Frederik to celebrate the royal’s 50th birthday.

Other events lined up to mark her milestone include an exhibition at Frederiksborg Castle, as well as the opening of the Crown Princess Mary Centre at the University of Copenhagen.

Last week it was revealed Princess Mary’s mother Henrietta ‘Etta’ Donaldson regularly reminded her that ‘you can only be yourself’ – and how those simple words have stayed with the royal.

Princess Mary’s mother tragically died from a heart condition when the royal was just 25 – three years before she met Prince Frederik.

Speaking to Eurowoman Magazine, the mother-of-four said that her mother’s advice to her had been with her during her most challenging moments.

‘She was absolutely right about that. I have reminded myself of those words when I have occasionally [felt like I was going to] lose myself,’ she said. ‘My life has offered great changes, joys and sorrows.

‘There are several landmark events: The grief of losing my mother. The joy of then becoming a mother. My time at university. To meet Frederik. To get married to the Crown Prince and become the Crown Princess for Denmark and the Danish people that I love so much. And maybe to be 50 – who knows?’

The royal has no qualms about turning 50 and said age has given her a sense of being more of a ‘whole person’.
