A popular betting site is charging members a hefty fee if they don’t use ‘inactive’ accounts at least once a month.

Users of CrownBet, which started as a subsidiary website of billionaire James Packer’s gambling empire, cop the $10 deduction for each month they remain inactive.

According to the site’s terms and conditions, punters must not use their account for a consecutive period of two years before it becomes inactive.

Once deemed inactive, the company claims it is ‘entitled to charge’ an administrative fee of up to $10 every month after.

However, it also states: ‘if (the) account balance is zero. (The website) will not charge any further inactive account fees.’

And once an account is deemed inactive, Bonus Bets and CrownBet Rewards Points will also be removed from the account.

The deductions have been in place since January 2016 according to the betting agency’s website.

One disgruntled punter took to Reddit to air their grievances, admitting they received the email for an account they ‘set up a while back that I completely forgot about’.

The poster later asked: ‘How exactly does this promote responsible gambling?’

Another punter agreed with the concern, saying ‘the gambling industry is so competitive, no reason to use these clowns when they pull s*** like this.’

Earlier this year, the website was sold by Packer’s Crown Resorts to Canadian gambling powerhouse The Stars Group as part of a $150million deal.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted CrownBet for comment.
