Estate agents Jackson-Stops say the sale is a rare opportunity as most farms in the area have either been bought and split up or are still used as operating farms.

South Hole Farm is thought to date back to the 17th century and is surrounded by rolling countryside with no near neighbours.

The farmhouse itself is currently used as a dual family residence with a 3/4 bedroom main section and a three-bedroom annexe, but could be a seven-bedroom family home or offer income through letting out the annexe.

The outbuildings offer an excellent opportunity for conversion with each having some lovely period features including a stunning roundhouse, 15th century windows and an original cobbled floor.

James Carroll from Jackson-Stops said: “A lot of these have already been converted so this really is a rare opportunity, not just because it’s been in the same family ownership for a century, but equally because there just aren’t many of these left.

‘Croyde is one of the most sought-after coastal locations. This is a mile and a half from the beach, you could walk that, but you’re tucked away in a valley surrounded by beautiful countryside.

‘There would be a lot of work involved to convert the outbuildings – their last use was as farm buildings, they had cattle in them up until fairly recently.

‘They are effectively shells but they are ready to be converted and you basically have a blank canvas.

‘It’s a coastal area of outstanding natural beauty so you’re not going to get new builds there. The place is full of character and it will be exciting to see what happens.’

Croyde is considered a hotspot for the surfing community and holidaymakers thanks to its sandy beaches and its annual Goldcoast Oceanfest, which will see performers including Rudimental and Kaiser Chiefs performing this year.

Other renowned surfing beaches nearby include Putsborough, Woolacombe and Saunton.

The property is being offered for sale by sealed bids and all interested parties wishing to bid will need to complete a tender form and return it to Jackson-Stops by April 17.

The estate can be split into four lots with the farmhouse available for £950,000.
